WINDHOEK, 03 DEC (NAMPA) - President Hifikepunye Pohamba has encouraged local farmers to prepare their fields for planting as the rainy season has started.
The President made the statement here on Tuesday during the last ordinary Cabinet meeting for 2013.
“I call upon farmers to prepare their fields for planting, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry should continue to assist our people with seeds and ploughing services,” he said.
The Head of State said irrigation projects such as Ndonga Linena in Kavango East and Sikondo in Kavango West are now producing and harvesting various crops for the local market.
He encouraged all local farmers to grow more crops as they now have access to the market via the Fresh Produce Hubs at Rundu and Ongwediva.
Pohamba further said Cabinet has approved the blueprint on the Mass Housing Development Programme.
The programme aims to build at least 185 000 affordable houses by the year 2030.
“Through the Ministry of Finance, Government has mobilised, and will continue to mobilise resources for the successful implementation of this initiative,” he said.
He therefore called upon the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development to ensure that the programme is implemented in full and on schedule within the allocated budget.
“We have formulated and adopted many policies, covering a wide spectrum of economic, social and physical spheres. I should emphasise that we will only achieve our stated objectives through decisive, timely, and expeditious implementation of our decisions. We must not tolerate lacklustre or half-hearted implementation of Cabinet decisions,” Pohamba stated.
He Government’s mandate is to respond timeously to the nation's needs for the delivery of quality public services.
“We must continue to innovate, to be resourceful and to find the best ways and means to give practical and tangible effect to the decisions we take in this Chamber,” Pohamba said.
The President said it is only in that spirit that Government will realise its national development goals and make Namibia a better place for all Namibians.
