RUNDU, 23 AUG (NAMPA) – The Northern Electricity Distributor (Nored) has distanced itself from a message circulating on social media, warning the public to be on the lookout for criminals claiming to be working for the company.
Nored Public Relations Officer, Simon Lukas in a statement issued on Thursday said the message is defamatory as it implicates individuals and a company Nored has contracted to carry out a network study and asset valuation in the region.
The message claims that the study team is not employed by Nored to carry out the project and is going from house to house, especially in the Ndama residential area, to check what people have in their houses with the intention to rob them at gunpoint at night.
The author of the message further incites violence by stating that if anyone happens to see any person claiming to be from Nored, they should tell their neighbours to attack the person and call the police, the statement said.
“However, Nored herewith states categorically that the company has indeed contracted Emcon Consulting Engineers to carry out a network study and asset valuation project in its entire area of operation, of which Kavango East Region is included,” it said.
The Emcon representatives are in possession of Nored identification cards with both the Nored and Emcon emblems.
It further said before the project commenced in every region and town where the company operates, all stakeholders such as the regional and local councils, police regional commanding office and the community were informed of the project through meetings as well as the media.
“Because of the negative impact of the social media circulations, Emcon representatives shall be accompanied by the Namibian Police and Nored team to carry out their designated duties in Rundu,” it said.
The company however cautioned the public to be on the lookout for criminals who might be using fake identification documents.
