Windhoek mayor, Muesee Kazapua, said come out to say that the state should look into honoring living heroes, while they are still alive.
"We need to look at each other eye to eye and tell each other that, what you did for the country has made you a hero and we acknowledge that by giving you this token of appreciation, he said.
“I am sure there are still many heroes of the liberation struggle alive and well and we need to act fast as we can to recognise our heroes. Once we do that they will be able to enjoy the fruits that come from their sweat. We must take a stand and take this issue to the next level as a nation which lost many heroes during the liberation struggle. We need to show our heroes that what they did for the country has made us all proud in many ways while they are still alive,” he said.
He added that even though street names are given to the heroes of the liberation struggle the ones that are alive can be recognised even by acknowledging their bravery with a medal of honor.
Kazapua also said that as responsible leaders, the leadership already drafted a bill to be submitted to the parliament regarding honoring alive heroes.
“We are waiting for feedback and we will see what the outcome is. Once the bill has been approved all alive heroes will benefit in some way or the other,” he said.
