Police officer stoned at Keetmanshoop

KEETMANSHOOP, 03 DEC (NAMPA) – A 31-year-old member of the Namibian Police's Special Field Force at Keetmanshoop was admitted to the Windhoek Central Hospital over the weekend after he was stoned and assaulted by civilians here.
A police incident report issued on Tuesday by the Commander of the Namibian Police Force in the //Karas Region, Commissioner Armas Shivute indicated that Constable Malipa Salufu is in a serious health condition after the stoning incident on Saturday evening.
According to the report, the officer was on night patrol, and at about 02h30 he came across a fight near the Oppihukki night club in the Kronlein residential area.
He stopped his private car - an Audi A4 sedan - and intervened to stop the fight between five men, but they turned on him and assaulted him.
“The police officer was severely beaten and stoned unconscious. The attackers also damaged his private car with stones and stabbed the tyres flat,” read the report.
Salufu was rushed to the Katutura State Hospital on Sunday, from where he was transferred to the Central Hospital on Monday.
The suspected attackers were arrested on Saturday, and were charged with attempted murder as well as malicious damage to property.
They are between 18 and 29 years old.
They are expected to appear in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court Tuesday afternoon.
