REHOBOTH, 15 AUG (NAMPA) - The Namibia Karate Union (Naku) has its sights set on the African Senior and Junior Karate Championship to be hosted simultaneously between 27 August to 02 September in Kigali, Rwanda.
In a statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday, Public Relations Officer of NAKU, Stefan van der Merwe said Namibia intends on making a big impact at the championships and is sending a 12 member team, consisting of some of Namibia’s most talented karate athletes.
The athletes include Freddy Mwiya Jnr, Mechelle Tjimuku and Mayvonne Swart, who participated at the Africa Youth Games, and 2017 Female Grand Champion, Suzelle Pronk.
Pronk scooped two silver medals for Kata and Kumite at this year’s Region 5 Karate Championships in Gaborone, Botswana.
The team will be accompanied Sensei Llewellyn Manale as Coach, Team Manager Sensei Leonard Martin, Namibian Chief Referee Sensei Wikus Oberholster, and the president of the Namibia Karate Union, Sensei Cornelius D'Alton.
The athletes will be departing for Kigali on 29 August and will return on 03 September.
Van der Merwe said, although NAKU would have like to send more athletes, financial difficulties did not allow them as athletes had to fund themselves for the trip.
“We are looking forward to sponsors coming on board to allow more athletes to be part of such opportunities to highlight the remarkable talent of the Namibian athletes,' he said.
