WINDHOEK, 07 AUG (NAMPA) – The 2018/19 Namibia Premier League (NPL) season is slated for the end of September, according to League Administrator, Joshua Tovey Hoebeb.
Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, Hoebeb said the league will only kick off once all the respective teams in the different First Divisions have been promoted to the NPL.
“We are currently working around the clock to finish off with the North East First Division games as they only have one game left to play in the two pools. The winners of those two will then play the home and away play-off to decide who gets promoted to the NPL,” he said.
Hoebeb said the North West First Division Stream still has a number of games to cover, but that all teams will be ready for NPL football by September.
“I am confident that before the end of August, we will be done with the First Division matches and we can at least have NPL kick-off in those last two weeks of September.”
At the moment, only Karasburg-based Young Brazilians Football Club have been crowned the Southern Stream Football Division champions and promoted to the NPL for the 2018/19 NPL season after beating Swakopmund-based Blue Boys 3-1 in their final play-off matches of that stream.
The teams fighting to secure a place in the country’s top-flight league for the 2018/19 season will replace Rundu Chiefs, Chief Santos and Young Chiefs who were relegated to the North East and North West First Division stream at the end of the 2017/18 NPL season.
Hoebeb also said the transfer window for the NPL opened on 01 August 2018 and will be closed on 05 October 2018.
