WINDHOEK, 20 JUL (NAMPA) – President of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Miroslav Lajcak noted that the late Theo-Ben Gurirab managed to fulfil his task before he left the earth.
In a short video message during the Gurirab’s official memorial service in the capital on Friday, Lajcak said that during his tenure as the president for the UN General Assembly’s truth session, Gurirab promoted principals, integrity and honesty.
“These are qualities of the hallmark of true leadership, qualities which should be emulated today. Gurirab’s death is not your loss alone as he was truly a global citizen,” said Lajcak.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will host a memorial service next week in honour of Gurirab who died last week Saturday.
The late politician and diplomat served as president of the 54th UNGA from 1999-2000.
UNICEF Representative and UN Resident Coordinator, Rachel Odede in her speech on behalf of the organisation, said Gurirab’s death is not only a loss to the Namibian nation.
“It is also a great loss to the development and human rights community within the UN,” Odede expressed.
She added that during Gurirab’s tenure as president, the UNGA successfully held a three-day millennium summit for world leaders, during which the millennium resolution 55/2 was adopted.
These historic millennium goals were meant to tackle poverty, among other issues.
