A Mariental man, Charles Michael Swartz (24) was slapped with an effective sentence of 20 years in jail in the Windhoek High Court last week for heartlessly murdering his pregnant girlfriend, Sara van der Westhuizen.

Swartz was slapped with six years for assault to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and six months for assault by threat while these two sentences will be served concurrently within his 20-year sentence.

It is the state’s case that Swartz had an abusive relationship with his then girlfriend and after being warned by a police officer, he later pounced on her while she was carrying his child, kicking her in the stomach and repeatedly hitting her with a steel wire.

He was 19 at the time and was employed as a security guard at Mariental when he killed his girlfriend by stabbing her seven times at her mother’s house.

The incident happened in 2012.

He also at one time wanted to commit suicide after which he had to be taken in custody until the completion of his trial and his attempt to get bail were thrown off the window.

“In this judgement of sentence, I have taken into account the youthfulness of the accused at the time he murdered the deceased as well as the fact that he has no previous convictions,” said High Court Judge Alfred Siboleka
