WINDHOEK, 11 JUL (NAMPA) – The Angermund Racing Club will host the Winter Cup horse racing competition at the Rehoboth horse racing track in the Hardap Region on Saturday.
Established in 2006, the club aims to develop and promote horse racing in Rehoboth and Namibia at large.
Ryno Angermund, the chairperson of the club told Nampa on Wednesday that they put aside an amount of N.dollars 60 000 for this year’s competition.
The chairperson said this money will be disbursed between the winning horses and each horse was registered with N.dollars 300 per race.
“We have 64 horses registered and this will be a nine race card event in both short and long distance divisions,” said Angermund.
Little Gypsy, Dashing Brave, Rockina and Target Search are among the horses expected to shine for the maiden division.
Angermund said that Okahandja Racing Club under the auspices of Benard Kaanjuka will be participating in the event as well.
He added that the main race which is 2 400 meters attracted horses like Surreptitious, La Myst and Achiever among others.
Winning Edge of Daniel Beukes won last year’s main race competition.
According to Angermund, seasonal horses like Professor, General, Katjutju, Okatenda, Von Trotha, Kapenailonga and Compressor will not be present at this year’s event.
“Our counterparts from Aminius, Epukiro, Otjinene, Okakarara, Ovitoto, Omaruru and Otjimbingwe will not be here as they are preparing for the July Handicap slated for 28 July in Okondjatu. But the support from the southern part of the country is huge and will make the event successful,” he said.
The racing competition will start at 12h00 Saturday.
