WINDHOEK, 29 JUN (NAMPA) The City of Windhoek Council on Thursday resolved to write off debts amounting to N.dollars 191 million belonging to pensioners and vulnerable residents.
The council agreed during a meeting to write off the debts deemed irrecoverable and in respect of pensioners and vulnerable residents who are unable to pay the arrears amount on their municipal accounts.
According to the City of Windhoek, a total of N.dollars 642 million was owed to the municipality with debts being older than three years and only accruing interest.
According to the council, the N.dollars 191 million which would be written off, came from pensioners who had already approached the city regarding their arrears, however, the CoW made provision for a debt write-off of just over N.dollars 600 million from all the pensioners in the city, including those who had not approached the CoW for the financial year 2017/18.
CoW Mayor Muesee Kazapua said during the meeting, the municipality was also in the process of introducing prepaid water metres for the pensioners who were in arrears, and urged the municipality and its officials to ensure that the process of writing off the debts was sustainable.
We should fast-track delivery of water and electricity, otherwise, we will be faced with the same problem in future, he said.
He further cautioned people living with and taking advantage of pensioners like young professionals who do not pay for municipal services, that they would be dealt with by the CoW.
