RUNDU, 28 JUN (NAMPA) – Mukwe Constituency Councillor, John Thighuru was on Thursday re-elected as Chairperson of the Kavango East Regional Council (KERC) and the management committee for a second term.
Other members of the committee joining Thighuru are Ndiyona Constituency Councillor, Eugene Likuwa and Mashare Constituency Councillor, Phillip Mavara.
Rundu Magistrate Sonia Sampofu presided over the election and swearing-in ceremony, which also decided the members of the management committee.
Speaking at the ceremony, Thighuru said he was grateful to be re-elected to serve as the council’s chairperson for the next two and a half years.
He thanked the Swapo Party for entrusting him with an enormous responsibility, which he said he will be committed to fulfilling and congratulated other councillors that were re-elected to serve with him on the management committee.
“I am humbled that you have placed your trust and faith in me,” he said.
Thighuru further noted that during his period as council chairperson, he would ensure that the decisions of the regional council are carried out as per Regional Council Act no. 22 of 1992.
“It is my promise that I would sincerely be faithful to uphold and defend the laws of Namibia in promoting democracy, justice and the rule of law,” said Thighuru.
As the main custodian of the region’s developmental needs, the chairperson also promised to facilitate and coordinate the capital projects of the region.
The first term of the KERC management committee members expired on 04 June 2018 and a new committee was due to be sworn in since last week.
However, the ceremony was postponed to 28 June 2018, due to misunderstandings amongst the councillors, which were later resolved and that paved the way for the swearing-in of the members.
