WINDHOEK, 28 JUN (NAMPA) – African Connection (AC) Boxing and Fitness Academy will host a juniors and seniors boxing tournament on Saturday at its gymnasium in Windhoek’s Northern Industrial Area.
The tournament is aimed at assessing the readiness of five boxers who will represent the country at the All Africa Youth Games to kick off in Algeria on 19 July this year.
The boxers; Trofinus Johannes, Joseph Hafeni, Flame Nangolo, Mateus Ngesheya and Divas Namugongo were selected during the inaugural National Youth Games held in Windhoek earlier this year.
Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, Immanuel ‘Imms’ Moses of AC Boxing and Fitness Academy said the aim is to keep the boxers busy and in shape ahead of their departure.
“We had a sparring session for them two weeks ago. Since most of these boys are from various gyms, we have therefore decided to help them train ahead of the games as we are waiting for the Namibia Sports Commission to help them with a training camp,” he said.
Moses added that this tournament will ensure that the boxers will go to Algeria well prepared.
“It is not necessary to wait for the federation or sports commission to avail funds for a training camp. Clubs must keep the boys busy training and such tournaments are a motivation.”
Moses added that the tournament will also bring boxing lovers together as well as encourage potential boxers to take the sport seriously, before calling upon fans to attend the tournament as it will have mouthwatering clashes.
Moses noted that the tournament has the full blessings of the Khomas Boxing Federation and that he aims to have these tournaments on a monthly basis.
