WINDHOEK, 14 JUN (NAMPA) - Namibia will commemorate the Day of the African Child in Mariental on Friday.
This was said by Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Doreen Sioka in Parliament on Wednesday.
Day of the African Child is observed on 16 June and honours students who participated in the Soweto Uprising to protest the poor quality of their education and demanded to be taught in their own languages in South Africa in 1976.
Sioka said this year's theme, ‘Leave no child behind for Africa’s development’, will lead to numerous challenges faced by children across the continent being addressed.
“The theme highlights the need to ensure that no child is left behind by targeting those not benefiting from Africa’s growth and development,” she said.
Sioka said Namibia has adopted the theme to suit the challenges the country is facing which hinder sustainable development.
She further said Namibia needs to priorities children and their rights in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
