WINDHOEK, 07 JUN (NAMPA) – The Epukiro Sports Council will host the Omaheke Top 8 football and netball tourney on 07 July 2018 at Legare Stadium in Gobabis.
The tournament is played by teams from Omaheke’s constituencies that reached the quarter finals of their annual December tournaments.
Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, Public Relations Officer of the Epukiro Sports Council, Kuveri Tjonga said that a total amount of N.dollars 35 000 is assigned to the football and netball. Football gets N.dollars 23 000 and the remaining N.dollars 12 000 is reserved for netball.
The registration fee per soccer team is N.dollars 1 500 and netball teams pay N.dollars 800.
However, there is a discount of N.dollars 600 for a team that has teams in each of the two codes in the Top 8 tournament, said Tjonga.
“This is intended to encourage village’s teams to perform better in the two sports codes and more specially, to promote netball,” he explained.
The netball winners will receive N.dollars 6 000, a trophy plus 12 gold medals, while the runners up will get N.dollars 3 000 and 12 silver medals. The two semi-finalists will each take home N.dollars 1 500.
As for soccer, the winner will walk away with N.dollars 11 000, a trophy plus 20 gold medals and the runner-up will take home N.dollars 6 000 and 20 silver medals.
There will be special prizes for the player of the tournament, coach and most disciplined player of the tournament in both sport codes.
In addition, the goalkeeper and defender of the tournament will take home trophies in the football category.
“We usually do this to promote the players and discipline them as well,” added Tjonga.
Last year’s soccer winners were Okaoveni from Otjinene, who failed to qualify for this year’s competition, while Aminius-based outfit Evero won the netball category.
