ONGWEDIVA, 02 JUN (NAMPA) – Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhardt Esau on Friday inaugurated the new fisheries exhibition hall at the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair (OATF) Centre.
The N.dollars 5.3 million hall was constructed by the Namcoast Fisheries Investment Trust.
Esau also handed the hall over to the Ongwediva Town Council and the OATF Preparatory Committee chaired by Damian Egumbo, the council’s chief executive officer.
He said the establishment of the facility is a milestone in the development of the OATF Centre.
“The hall will be used to showcase important developments in the fisheries sector in Namibia, such as species of commercial importance to the country, value-added products, machinery and new technologies,” the minister explained, adding that products from other economic sectors will also be on display.
Esau said his ministry will continue to call on the fishing industry to participate in the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair to help create awareness of the importance of fisheries to Namibia’s economy, and of fish consumption.
Also speaking at the event was Ongwediva Mayor Angelina Angula, who announced that the 19th OATF will take place from 24 August until 01 September under the theme ‘Creating an enabling environment for industrialised local economy’.
“This theme is driving us towards the day when we will explore, process and trade our own products locally and internationally,” Angula said.
Oshana Governor Clemens Kashuupulwa and the chairperson of the Confederation of Namibia Fishing Associations, Matti Amukwa were also in attendance.
