WINDHOEK, 26 MAY (NAMPA) The National Unity Democratic Organisations third elective congress has been thrown into chaos early Saturday night after fights erupted between members of the two competing factions.
Nudo party members confronted each other and were seen exchanging blows outside the Greiters Conference Centre hall where the elections were scheduled to take place.
The fights broke out allegedly after members from Team 100 per cent VK, the slate led by Okakarara Constituency Councillor Vetaruhe Kandorozu, were denied entry into the hall.
Delegates from the Utjiua Miunjangue-led Team Nudo were seen proceeding with the congress inside.
Angry delegates from Team 100 per cent VK slammed this from outside the hall.
When approached by Nampa, Kandorozu, who was outside with his supporters, said he was dismayed by the developments.
We dont condone hooliganism. Whatever is happening there is illegal and the current leadership will continue until a duly convened congress takes place, charged Kandorozu.
The congress was supposed to elect the party leadership for the next five years and amend its constitution where it deemed fit.
Miunjangue was among the delegates inside the hall, alongside Team Nudo secretary general candidate, Joseph Kauandenge.
When approached for comment, Kauandenge responded to Nampa via text message that fights in contests of this magnitude were unavoidable.
Fights are bound to happen in events like this. It is rather unfortunate that it happened, but we managed to resolve it amicably, he claimed.
Police, meanwhile, have been called to restore order.
