ETUNDA, 12 MAY (NAMPA) The unity and solidarity that bonded Namibians during the protracted struggle for liberation of the country should inspire the nation to remain one people, Founding President, Dr Sam Nujoma said on Saturday.
It is only through unity and solidarity that we as a nation can overcome the countless economic and political challenges we face, Nujoma said during his 89th birthday celebrations at his home village of Etunda near Okahao in the Omusati Region.
He went on to say the development of the country and realisation of the benefits may only be achieved through concerted individual and collective efforts by all patriotic Namibians.
Nujoma told those present that this year he dedicated his birthday celebration to all patriotic Namibians, including the born-frees and children and veterans of the liberation struggle.
Our convening here in celebration of my birthday is therefore not an accident but as a homecoming pilgrimage for me to pay homage to my parents, the Etunda and surrounding communities who have all raised me, Nujoma pointed out.
Namibias retired statesman was born on 12 May 1929 at Etunda village. His birthday has been celebrated by Namibians from all walks of life each year since independence in 1990.
The Sam Nujoma Foundation, chaired by former Prime Minister Nahas Angula, hosted this years celebrations with support from various companies and individuals through financial and logistical contributions.
Speaking at the same event, Angula announced that the Sam Nujoma Foundation is planning to build a Sam Nujoma Foundation centre in the country to serve as a symbol of anti-colonial resistance and a Pan-African centre for the promotion of African ideals of unity, solidarity, justice and Pan-Africanism.
The Sam Nujoma Foundation is aimed at promoting and enhancing the principles, values and ideals for which Sam Nujoma stood for the values of justice, freedom, solidarity, sharing, and struggle for common good, said Angula.
Over 1 000 people attended the birthday party that was celebrated under the theme Building the Future through Unity and Solidarity.
