WINDHOEK, 11 MAY (NAMPA) – The Khomas Region's Under-17 (U17) boys football team hit the ground running at the first ever National Youth Games currently underway in here.
On the opening day of the tournament on Thursday, the Khomas U17 team ran rampage of their opponents from Ohangwena in one of the high scoring matches of the day.
The opening matches of the competition saw 16 goals scored in six fixtures with Khomas beating Ohangwena 4-0 in their Group A fixture while another Group A match saw Kavango East beat Kunene 3-1.
In Group B, Karas beat Oshana 2-1, while in Group C Hardap thrashed their opponents Otjozondjupa 3-1.
The only Group D match played on the day saw Erongo beating Omaheke 2-0.
The only match that did not produce any goals during day one was between Group B opponents Kavango West and Omusati.
Kavango West arrived for the tournament half an hour before their match after struggling with transport a day before.
The only region that did not come with a football team is Oshana. The absence of the Oshana football team was necessitated by the regional teams struggle to secure transport from their government garages on time for the competition.
Day two of the boy’s football matches will kick as early as 08h00 on Friday at the University of Namibia Football Stadium.
The games are taking place from Thursday to Saturday in Windhoek.
Over 1 800 athletes and officials are participating in the games that include men’s football, athletics, basketball, boxing, judo, netball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
