REHOBOTH, 06 MAY (NAMPA) – Young Brazilians from Karasburg won the ‘Die Oog’ football tournament after defeating fellow Southern Stream First Division campaigners, Try Again from Keetmanshoop 2-0 in Karasburg on Saturday.
Sponsored by the Die Oog Bar, the two-day tournament attracted eight teams, with Try Again the only team from Keetmanshoop. The rest are from surrounding areas such as #Gabis, Grünau, Stolzenels and Noordoewer.
En route to the final, Young Brazilians defeated Tornado, also from Karasburg, 1-0 in the first game and dispatched Moving Stars 2-1 in the semifinal.
Try Again hammered Young Dominates 5-1 in the first game before beating Noordoewer-based Orange Rangers 3-1.
Results provided by the organisers Sunday state that Benjamin Bensaz Fransman opened the scoring and Young Brazilians went into the break with a one-goal lead.
The second half saw Try Again asking questions to the Brazilians’ rear guard, but the home team stood firm and extended their lead through Jantjies Jana Vries to put the result beyond Try Again’s reach.
Tolla Julius, coach of Young Brazilians, commended his players on winning the tournament.
“We successfully defended our title that we won last year. Try Again gave us a run for our money, but in the end we came out victorious,” Julius said while applauding the organisers for staging the tournament to keep football alive.
He said other businesspeople should also come on board and sponsor sport teams as the financial pressure on teams is too much.
“With their help we can improve football in the south,” Julius, one of the organisers, told Nampa Sunday.
Young Brazilians won N.dollars 10 000, 20 gold medals and a trophy.
Try Again won N.dollars 5 000 and 20 silver medals, with the two semifinal losers each taking home N.dollars 2 500.
