Cassinga commemoration kicks off

WINDHOEK, 04 MAY (NAMPA) – People from all walks of life arrived at Heroes’ Acre for the 40th commemoration of Cassinga Day on Friday morning.
Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Doreen Sioka and several members of the diplomatic corps were part of the early arrivals.
Community members wearing white Cassinga themed t-shirts and caps filled the pavilion, while the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe entertained the crowd.
Veteran and revolutionary Namibian reggae musician, Ras Sheehama also had the crowd on their feet.
They were awaiting the arrival of President Hage Geingob and First Lady Monica Geingos; Angolan President, João Lourenço and First Lady Ana Dias Lourenço as well as Cuban Ambassador, Giraldo Mazola.
The activities planned for the day included a wreath laying ceremony and two minutes of silence in remembrance of the innocent lives lost in 1978 in southern Angola. Cassinga survivors were also set to perform a song, while the Cuban ambassador was scheduled to read a poem by a Cuban soldier.
