GROOTFONTEIN, 27 APR (NAMPA) The road between Gobabis and Grootfontein, which was recently renovated to bitumen standards, has impressed President Hage Geingob.
Geingob on Friday officially inaugurated the new tarred from Gobabis in the Omaheke Region to Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The 391 kilometre stretch of road was built by the China Henan International Cooperation Group between December 2013 and March 2018.
Geingob said phase one of the road stretched from Gobabis to Otjinene, while the second phase stretched from Otjinene to Okamatapati, with the last phase going from Okamatapati to Grootfontein.
He said the new road is part of Governments commitment to ensure that Namibia solidifies itself as a gateway and regional logistics hub in Southern Africa.
Geingob said the road links Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana and Angola via Namibias top standard road infrastructure.
This road forms part of Route 301 of the SADC Regional Trunk Road Network, and is therefore of national, regional and international significance.
Geingob called on the people and business people in the two regions to safely enjoy moving through this new tarred road and start up new businesses alongside it.
The road was constructed at a cost of over N.dollars 600 million.
Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa and Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhang Yiming and several local and regional councillors from the two regions also attended the event.
