RUNDU, 26 APR (NAMPA) The Kavango West Regional Council and traditional authority leaders in the region are expected to meet next week to finalise preparations of the nationwide clean-up campaign taking place on the 25 May.
Regional Governor, Sirkka Ausiku said in an interview with Nampa on Thursday that the meeting will be held with the Ukwangali Traditional Authority and the Mbunza Traditional Authority as well as all eight constituency councillors.
President Hage Geingob recently announced that the nationwide clean-up campaign, which was initially scheduled for 01 May, will now take place on 25 May 2018.
Ausiku said to respond to the presidents call, meetings on the preparations for the campaign are being held and they have decided to make the clean-ups a monthly exercise and not a once-off activity.
Meeting the traditional authorities is to see how they can also be part of the campaign, as traditional leaders can have a big influence, she said.
Ausiku added that in order for the campaign to be successful, councillors have already started educating the public through the radio to bring awareness on the importance of a clean environment.
It is not just about having a clean environment, but also about protecting ourselves from diseases such Hepatitis E that are caused by unhygienic surroundings.
Ausiku further said that stakeholders in the community such as churches, taxi drivers and long distance drivers were also asked to play a part in the campaign, while also calling on the business community to come on board.
Churches are expected to give announcements during church services regarding health issues, encouraging people to keep their surroundings clean, while public transport drivers should ensure that travellers do not litter.
