GOBABIS, 26 APR (NAMPA) President Hage Geingob is expected to officially commission the completed portion of the Gobabis-Aminuis-Aranos road during May.
The date of the actual commissioning is yet to be made known, Omaheke Regional Governor, Festus Ueitele announced during his State of the Region Address (SORA) on Tuesday here.
The first phase of the project, which stretches over 120 kilometres (km) from Gobabis to Onderombapa in the Aminuis Constituency, was completed by November last year and opened to motorists.
The total length of the road will be 240km, and will link the Omaheke Regions main economic centre of Gobabis to Aranos in the Hardap Region.
Ueitele said all major work on the first phase of the road has been completed and awaiting commissioning.
I am delighted to inform you that all earthworks are 100 per cent completed; all layer work is 100 per cent completed; all surfacing work (black top) is 100 per cent completed; road signage 95 per cent complete and road marking 95 per cent complete, he said.
The project has a total of 69 employees of which 35 per cent are female. It will however release all general workers by the end of April 2018 as the activities wind down, Ueitele added.
Work on the second phase of the project has been stalled due to budgetary constraints, and will as such only commence once a budgetary allocation has been made.
The road covers an extensive part of the Aminuis Constituency, which has led to some residents of the constituency getting employed during the construction.
The C22 road to Aminuis has for long been a source of concern to motorists due to its bad state, which made travelling a cumbersome and often dangerous undertaking.
The road is being upgraded to bitumen standard to solve these issues, and also to link the Omaheke Region with the southern part of the country by tarred road.
The Roads Contractor Company, at the start of construction in 2013, said all necessary safety measures will be put in place to ensure that the road, which passes through high density residential areas, does not endanger the lives of those who live along it.
