OTJIWARONGO, 22 APR (NAMPA) – The Otjiwarongo Municipality held its annual wellness day for employees on Friday.
Strategic Executive for Human Resources, Administration and Corporate Affairs, Marlay Mbakera told Nampa their wellness day is a big success every year.
Four doctors attend to the workers on invitation by the municipality during the event.
“It is only through these events that some employees have gotten to know of their problems and were medically assisted,” she said.
Mbakera said three municipality employees were in 2016 diagnosed with prostate cancer at a wellness day event.
Several other workers have, through the event, been assisted with professional rehabilitation for addictions to gambling and alcohol.
Otjiwarongo Mayor, Bennes Haimbondi, in his statement, said the events are important as they also helps to curb absenteeism due to sick leave.
Tests for Hepatitis B, cholesterol levels, diabetes, blood pressure are carried out, while voluntary HIV/Aids testing and counselling also formed part of the day.
“This we have allowed as a council in order to educate our employees and also for them to seek medical assistance at an early stage,” said Haimbondi.
The mayor then encouraged all 118 employees of the municipality to take part in the event.
Employees who spoke to this news agency at the event said they were appreciative of the municipality’s efforts.
Rachel Engelbrecht said she usually waits until she is unwell before seeing a doctor, which is not ideal.
Sageus Nujoma praised his management for their efforts to maintain a healthy workforce.
