WINDHOEK, 21 APR (NAMPA) – Khomasdal outfit Civics were too strong for their Second Division opponents Once Again, who they thrashed 10-1 to advance to the next round of the Debmarine Namibia Cup on Saturday.
The Round of 16 matches are scheduled for Windhoek and Walvis Bay, with teams vying for the last eight of the competition.
Despite losing by a huge margin, Once Again started on the right foot as they found the back of the net in the fifth minute after a brilliant strike by Joseph Hausiku left Edward Maova stranded.
The flood gates were opened from the 25th minute when Donald Geiseb opened the scoring for Civics. By half-time the composed Civilians, as the Khomasdal-based team is also known, netted five goals, with Erich Ochurub and Nguzu Salazar scoring one each, while Geiseb netted two more for his hat-trick.
The first half ended 5-1 in favour of Civics.
The second half saw Civics score a further five goals, with Once Again struggling to find the back of the net.
Geiseb scored three more goals to make it six on the day, while Ochurub scored his brace and Matheus Halupe added one more for a 10-1 win.
Once Again head coach Kamati Augustinus told Nampa the game was a huge lesson for his players and technical staff.
“As a team we can’t be upset after losing to a Premier League team. There are a number of things we could have avoided but they are a step ahead of us and they were physically stronger, plus they had more experience compared to our boys who played on artificial turf for the first time,” he said.
Augustinus added that their attention will now turn to the Second Division League, were they are fighting for promotion to the first division in the 2018/19 season.
