Lindeque nominated for UNEP assistant SG position

WINDHOEK, 20 APR (NAMPA) – Cabinet has endorsed the nomination of Ministry of Environment and Tourism Permanent Secretary Malan Lindeque for the position of Assistant Secretary-General (SG) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The decision was made during the Cabinet session held on 17 April, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Engel Nawatiseb said during a media briefing held in the capital on Friday.
“Cabinet directed the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation to make this nomination and further to support Lindeque’s candidacy for position of SG of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species,” Nawatiseb said.
Cabinet also resolved and directed the ministry to convey such support to the Executive Director of UNEP, Erik Solheim.
UNEP, as the leading global environmental authority within the United Nations system, promotes the environmental dimension of sustainable development and serves as the authoritative advocate for the environment.
The assistant SG supports the programme of work entrusted to him or her by the SG and assists in the overall management of the programme, among other responsibilities.
