WINDHOEK, 19 APR (NAMPA) – The Namibia Sports Commission on Thursday announced the 2018 National Youth Games sponsors in the capital.
The sponsors were announced by the Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service Erastus Uutoni, who called on more private companies to come on board as sponsors.
“Youth sports development cannot be undermined if Namibia is to be known as a winning nation. But this cannot be government’s job alone,” he said.
He added that sports can be used to fight youth unemployment, which is why the government decided to support the games.
Uutoni further called on stakeholders in the sports fraternity to work together in developing sports so as to attract sponsors.
The first ever Under-20 National Youth Games will be hosted in Windhoek from 10-13 May 2018 under the theme ‘Enhancing the future of a sporting nation’.
Companies that have committed themselves to the games are NamPower, which pledged N.dollars 200 000, and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, which will be a media partner.
Coca-Cola will be the official drinks sponsor, while Namibia Breweries Limited will be water sponsors through their product Bonaqua.
Currently, the total sponsorship stands at N.dollars 820 000 while the total cost of the games is expected to be between N.dollars 1.5 million and N.dollars 2 million.
Depending on how much the sponsors bring in, the rest of the bill will be footed by the government.
All 14 regions have confirmed their participation at the games in 10 sport codes; athletics, basketball, boxing, judo, netball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, football and visually impaired basketball.
The competition will help the organisers select a team that will participate in the 2018 Region Five U-20 Youth Games slated for Gaborone, Botswana in December.
