KEETMANSHOOP, 08 APR (NAMPA) – The Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Erastus Uutoni said the Neckartal Dam is an investment made by the government to create opportunities for its people.
Speaking at the Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency’s belated independence celebrations here on Saturday, Uutoni said the dam will supply water to an irrigation scheme.
He urged the //Kharas Region’s people to make use of the opportunity to improve their living standard, saying he does not want people from other countries to come and make use of the opportunity.
“I do not want to see people, especially from other countries, come and take this great opportunity from your hands. Once the dam is completed, take the opportunity and make use of it, the government has given it to you,” the minister said.
Uutoni said it is now time for the region’s inhabitants to rise up and do something for themselves and stop demanding things from Government.
“Stop saying the government must do this and this for you, you have a brain, hands and legs, just like those who come from other countries and enjoy our resources in our country,” he added.
Neckartal Dam is located in the Berseba Constituency and its construction started in 2013. It is expected to be completed by October this year, according to the Italian company commissioned by Government to build the dam, Salini Impregilo.
The dam will cost the Namibian Government over N.dollars 5.7 billion once completed and will supply water to a 5 000 hectare irrigation scheme.
The irrigation scheme project is expected to employ close to 800 employees and over 1 000 during harvest time, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry.
