Jonas qualifies for boxing Round of 16 at Commonwealth Games

WINDHOEK, 06 APR (NAMPA) Namibias Jonas Junias Jonas on Thursday registered his first win in the mens boxing Round of 32 at the 2018 Commonwealth Games underway in Queensland, Australia.
The 64 kilogramme boxer beat Rashield Williams of Bahrain on points after three rounds of boxing. All five judges scored in his favour.
The win against Williams means the 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medallist booked himself a spot in the Round of 16, where he will face Valentin Kondakov of Samoa on Sunday.
Also on Thursday, Namibias only triathlon athlete Jean-Paul Burger finished 15th in the mens event. He was two minutes, 47 seconds (2:47) behind the winner Henri Schoeman of South Africa. Jacob Birtwhistle of Australia took silver and the bronze medal went to Marc Austin of Scotland.
In bowling, Team Namibias Carel Olivier, Douw Calitz and Willem Esterhuizen opened the mens triple play with a 25-10 win against Niue and 16-11 win against Canada on Thursday to top their Section C group with six points from two matches.
The womens fours sectional play team, which is in Section A, lost their opening match at the Games 13-17 against Malaysia. Anjuleen Viljoen, Lesley Vermeulen, Sheena du Toit and Johanna van den Bergh are competing in the four-sectional play for the womens bowls team.
The Namibian team is competing in athletics, bowls, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, Para-sports and triathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which end on 15 April.
