Oshakati doctor faces rape, GBH and assault charges

OSHAKATI, 05 APR (NAMP) – A 40-year-old medical doctor at the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital, who allegedly forced a 20-year-old student into sexual intercourse in the Ongwediva area on Monday afternoon, made his first court appearance here on Thursday.
Benhard Shitende Mulumba is facing three charges: rape, assault with intend to cause grievous bodily harm, and assault by threat.
He was not asked to plead on the said charges, and was remanded in police custody until Wednesday when the court will attend to his formal bail application.
It is alleged that Mulumba, a Congolese national and a resident of Ongwediva, offered the victim a lift and drove to the Onawa village situated on the outskirts of Ongwediva, where he reportedly raped her in his car.
The victim opened a case with the Namibian Police at Ongwediva on Monday night.
Mulumba was arrested on Tuesday after the victim provided the police with the registration number of his vehicle.
Magistrate Makapa Simasiku presided over Mulumba’s case, Public Prosecutor Mpule Siyamunji appeared for the State while a local lawyer, Tuwilika Shailemo of the Shailemo Associates, defended the accused.
