MARIENTAL, 01 APR (NAMPA) – Agribank donated 15 cows to five farmers last week for dairy milk production purposes.
The donation took place at the !Aimab Superfarm outside Mariental in the Hardap Region.
The beneficiaries who each received three cows, of which two are pregnant heifers, farm in the Dordabis, Hochanas, Kalkrand and Otjozondjupa and Kunene areas.
Speaking during the event, Agribank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sakaria Nghikembua said the donation stems from a longstanding relationship between the bank and the super dairy farm.
The first donation of cows was made in 2017 to five other beneficiaries.
Nghikembua said the bank does not only provide financing for its clients, which involves agreements and paying back, but also looks at developing people.
The bank thus ventured into developing smaller farmers by helping them get into dairy production to diversify their products, as most farmers in the country concentrate mostly on beef production.
“Agriculture needs diversification and we encourage adding value to agricultural products,” he said.
Maria Paulus who benefited from the donation last year, said the cows have improved her livelihood.
She is now able to supply milk in Maltahohe and nearby towns from her farm known as Farm Odette, situated 20 kilometres outside Maltahohe.
Previously unemployed, Paulus said she now makes around N.dollars 1 000 per month from selling milk, which she uses to take care of her household.
“I have been a farm lady from the start and wanted to make my own profit,” she said.
