TSUMEB, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - The 28th Independence celebrations are underway at the Oscar Norich Stadium in Tsumeb.
The two former Presidents, Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba, as well as current President Hage Geingob are all present at the event.
Other high ranking officials attending the celebrations include former Vice President (VP) Nickey Iyambo; VP Nangolo Mbumba; president of the official opposition, the Popular Democratic Movement, McHenry Venaani; Chief Justice Peter Shivute and Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Earlier on, there were fears that the event might be cancelled due to flooding following heavy rains received in the area.
Julius #Gaeseb, who serves on the Independence celebrations organising committee, told Nampa they however managed to ensure that all was in place with the help of the Tsumeb Municipality.
“It was not a flood. We expected this because Tsumeb normally receives rain this time of the year,” he said in response to concerns that arose after a video clip of the flooded stadium circulated on social media.
He explained that there were some issues with the drainage system at the stadium, but it was sorted out.
Wednesday’s programme amongst others includes performances by the Exodus Choir and Tsumeb Art Centre, followed by the keynote address President Geingob.
