WINDHOEK, 08 MAR (NAMPA) – The high expenditure on the Ministry of Defence in the 2018/19 National Budget was a decision taken by Parliament, Minister of Finance Calle Schlettwein has said.
He was responding to concerns by the business community during a budget review dinner in the capital on Wednesday, after tabling the budget earlier in the day.
This ministry was allocated N.dollars 5 959 615 000 for the 2018/19 financial year and last year received N.dollars 5 683 569 000.
Schlettwein explained that the defence ministry has committed to long-term contracts regarding the buying of military equipment and upgrading of some military infrastructure.
“These are fixed overheads that cannot be escaped,” he said, adding that as small as the Namibian population may be, it does not mean the country should be caught off guard should a war break out.
Schlettwein further said it should also be taken into consideration that Namibian Defence Force members are involved in international peacekeeping, anti-poaching, drought relief and marine safety activities, which further justifies the allocation of such an amount to the ministry.
