Fears over an outbreak of Listeriosis in South Africa have seen some of the biggest locally based supermarkets getting rid of imported Enterprise and Rainbow Chicken’s products early yesterday.

The outbreak which has so far claimed the lives of 180 people and affecting a thousand more in South Africa is said to have originated from polony products from an Enterprise Foods factory in Polokwane.

The factory was subjected to 16 environmental tests which came out positive and according to the Times Live, a South African news outlet, he results from the factory were confirmed at midnight on Saturday at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases as the strain to blame for the outbreak that killed 27% of patients in South Africa.

Speaking to The Villager yesterday morning, ShopRite Independence branch manager Janine van Wyk confirmed that they had already chucked out the polony off their shelves.
