OTJIWARONGO, 03 MAR (NAMPA) – The defending champions of The Namibian Newspaper Cup have promised to keep the cup in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The popular annual football tourney is scheduled to kick off in Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region at the end of the month.
Head coach Robert Gurirab in an interview with Nampa on Friday said Otjozondjupa’s under-20 (U-20) has 30 fresh and young football players to choose from to establish the regional 20-player team.
“We don’t have stars, but we have skilful, strong and loyal players whom we have to sharpen to form a regional team and do the job at the games,” said Gurirab.
The U-20 regional management on 18 February this year organised trials in Otavi to identify these young soccer players.
Gurirab said the 30 players will all attend final trials expected to take place during the second week of March in Otjiwarongo.
The new team comprises of boys aged between 17 and 19 from the region’s seven constituencies – Okahandja, Okakarara, Otjiwarongo, Otavi, Grootfontein, Omatako and Tsumkwe.
Nearly all players on the list already play for established football clubs in the region including Eleven Arrows Football Club (FC), Dynamos, Touch and Go, Otjiwarongo FC, Sundowns and Okahandja FC.
Gurirab said some players form part of the first division at their respective clubs.
Players of the 2017 regional team that participated in the newspaper tournament in Swakopmund in April last year, are above 20 years this year.
Otjozondjupa then defeated Erongo 2-1 in the finals to win the floating trophy and N.dollars 35 000.
The region has won the cup three times, in 2006, 2013 and 2017.
