ONGWEDIVA, 03 MAR (NAMPA) – Four sports clubs benefited from a donation of sports equipment from the Ongwediva Town Council.
The equipment valued at N.dollars 15 000 was handed over Thursday by Mayor Angelina Angula.
The Ongwediva-based clubs are Nakapele Volleyball Club and Oshana Basketball Club, which received N.dollars 4 000 each; Diva Youth Football Club and Ongwediva Youth Soccer Academy, which received N.dollars 3 500 respectively.
In her keynote speech, Angula commended the leadership of the clubs for their commitment and dedication towards development within the community, particularly the youth.
“It is through your vision that we will be able reap the fruit of your hard work in the near future and it is through your efforts that we are hopeful of a healthy town, because sport promotes individuals’ personal health,” the mayor noted.
She added that the town council does not only aim to donate equipment and relax, but feels obliged to make follow ups to figure out whether what was donated is really being used as intended.
The clubs’ coaches expressed gratitude for the donations, noting that they would indeed use the equipment appropriately, with Nakapele Volleyball Club adding that the equipment came at the right time as the club’s league is scheduled to kick off this weekend.
The clubs, however, raised concern over the lack of training and playing facilities, identifying this as one of their main challenges.
One of the only two available local sports fields is currently in a dilapidated condition, while the other is occupied by other clubs most of the time, forcing teams to either put off practice or to travel to surrounding areas just for this activity.
The clubs consist mainly of children aged 8 and older.
