MARIENTAL, 11 FEB (NAMPA) – The Office of the Omaheke Governor will officially launch the Governor’s Cup on 16 February in Gobabis under the theme, ‘Promoting Regional Sports Development’.
A letter from the Governor’s Office availed to Nampa by Omaheke League chairperson, Ludwig ‘Croocks’ Nunuheb, said the initiative is driven by the regional leadership’s commitment to supporting the development of a sustainable and diverse sport and recreation system.
This is to encourage participation, develop talent and contribute to the health and wellbeing of individuals and groups in the region.
Speaking to Nampa on Friday, Nunuheb said the initiative by the Governor’s office will create a platform for the scouting of football players for the Omaheke regional teams to represent the region at various national tournaments.
“I applaud the gesture shown by the political head of the region to be involved in sports development in the region. We will also use the tournament for trials to select our Under-20 The Namibian Newspaper Cup football team,” Nunuheb remarked.
The Governor’s Cup sports tournament is planned for the weekend of 24 and 25 February at Ben Van der Walt Primary School.
The tournament will include games for the general public such as tug of war, tyre races and many more.
Other activities include performances by local artists and different cultural groups.
Nunuheb called on the Omaheke Region community to join the festivities.
