SWAKOPMUND, 09 FEB (NAMPA) – Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua will launch the fourth Governor’s Cup Tournament in Omaruru on Saturday.
The football and netball tournament will take place at the Correctional Training College sports field and ends on Sunday.
Speaking to Nampa from Omaruru on Friday, Mutjavikua’s personal assistant Bella Situde said the tournament will serve as the trials for the 2018 Namibian Newspaper Cup. The two top teams from both categories will represent the region at the tournament.
“Most importantly, the governor is hosting and sponsoring this rotating tournament to allow rural youth a chance to participate.”
She said N.dollars 60 000 is being injected into the tournament.
Eight football teams and seven netball teams from all seven constituencies have registered to compete for the floating trophies and cash prizes.
The first prize in the football category is a trophy and N.dollars 2 000 in cash. The teams in second and third place will get N.dollars 1 300 and N.dollars 1 000 respectively.
For netball, the overall winner will receive N.dollars 1 000, while the teams in second and third place will receive N.dollars 750 and N.dollars 500.
The winning teams will also receive gold, silver and bronze medals.
In a statement provided by Situde, Mutjavikua called on all stakeholders to support the initiative and encourage youth development in the region.
“It cannot be overemphasised that our youth are our future leaders who need guidance and encouragement,” he said.
The tournament took place in Karibib last year and is expected to take place in either Omatjete, Otjimbingwe or Usakos next year.
