WINDHOEK, 08 FEB (NAMPA) – President Hage Geingob on Thursday announced that Vice President Nickey Iyambo has stepped down from his position on health grounds.
Geingob during the Official Opening of the First Cabinet Meeting of 2018 replaced Iyambo with former Swapo Party Secretary General, Nangolo Mbumba.
The President said Iyambo indicated that he wished to step down as Vice President due to ill health.
“I commend you for giving me time to look for your replacement,” said Geingob.
Iyambo fainted during the burial of former Cabinet Minister, Rosalia Nghidinwa at Nkurenkuru last month.
He collapsed while seated in the tent assigned for dignitaries while Nghidinwa’s casket was being lowered into the ground and was rushed out of the tent by bodyguards.
The veteran politician also collapsed in 2016, shortly after addressing a belated Heroes’ Day celebration at Tsumeb.
Oshikoto Governor Henock Kankoshi at the time said Iyambo fainted because he had not had anything to eat.
