GIBEON, 30 JAN (NAMPA) – A fire caused extensive damage to the hostel of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN) in Gibeon on Monday.
The boys’ block which accommodates 40 boys and two rooms of caretakers suffered the most damage.
The Namibian Police Force’s Regional Commander, John Lifasi confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying no fatalities or casualties were reported.
“At this stage we can’t say what caused the fire. We are busy investigating,” Lifasi said.
Nampa understands that the learners were busy practicing for the athletics when the fire broke out.
Hardap Governor Esme Isaack on Tuesday told this news agency the Gibeon Village Council does not have proper firefighting equipment and they had to call in the Mariental Municipality fire brigade to assist.
“The NamWater water tanker that could have assisted was without water and they had to first get water to help,” Isaack said.
The boys slept in the hostel’s dining hall Monday night.
“We are waiting for the team from the ELCRN head office accompanied by the Associate General Secretary, Wilfred Diergaardt to tell us what should be done,” Isaack said.
The governor called on businesses and private individuals to assist with donations as the boys lost all their belongings in the fire.
In total, the hostel accommodates six employees and 67 learners who attend different schools in Gibeon.
