Shaningwa denies double salary claims

EENHANA, 29 JAN (NAMPA) – Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sophia Shaningwa has denied claims she is receiving two salaries for her ministerial position as well as Swapo-party Secretary-General (SG).
Speaking at the inauguration of the Eenhana Fire and Emergency Station here on Monday, Shaningwa said she is waiting for the appointing authority, President Hage Geingob, to assign someone to take over her ministerial responsibilities.
She was responding to public allegations that she is unwilling to resign as minister and receiving salaries from both the government and the ruling party.
Shaningwa was elected SG during the party’s ordinary congress held in Windhoek in November last year and she is expected to resign as a minister to take up the SG position, which is a full-time position.
Some quarters of society have accused her of being reluctant to start working for Swapo by prolonging her stay with the ministry.
“I am ready (to resign) as of yesterday, but a new minister has to be appointed to sign off together with me the handover and takeover of the ministry’s responsibilities,” Shaningwa stated.
“I don’t get a Swapo salary, but I am a full-time SG in the office of Swapo and doing Government job at the same time without getting double pay,” Shaningwa revealed.
Ohangwena Regional Governor, Usko Nghaamwa used the occasion to introduce Shaningwa as a gallant daughter of the Namibian soil, who excels in her responsibilities as a senior Government official and a Swapo politician.
