WINDHOEK, 18 JAN (NAMPA) – The by-election for the Ncuncuni Constituency in the Kavango West Region will be held on 28 March 2018 to fill the vacancy left when councillor Rosa Kavara died earlier this month.
Kavara passed away at the Lady Pohamba Private Hospital in Windhoek on 02 January 2018 after she had a stroke.
According to the Electoral Act, No. 5 of 2014, an election to fill a political office that has become vacant between general elections, must take place within 90 days of the position becoming vacant.
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)’s acting Chief Electoral Officer, Petrus Shaama said in a media statement issued Thursday the election process will start with the supplementary registration of voters from 24 to 27 January 2018.
“The supplementary registration of voters is aimed at registering new applicants and individual voters who have changed address and lost their voter card,” he said.
The ECN said in order to be registered as a voter in the upcoming by-election, an individual should be a resident of that constituency; above the legal voting age; and a Namibian citizen.
The registration process will be followed by the nomination of candidates.
The late Kavara served as Regional Councillor for Ncuncuni Constituency since 2010; the Standing Committee on Regional Development and Reports as well as the National Council Women's caucus between 2011 and 2015.
