WINDHOEK, 03 JAN (NAMPA) Brave Warriors head coach Ricardo Mannetti has named his final 23 players to do duty at the 2018 Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for 12 January to 04 February in Morroco.
A media statement issued on Wednesday by the Namibia Football Association indicates that Mannetti released injured players, Calvin Spiegel and Immanuel Heita, who are nursing ankle and knee injuries respectively.
Tijuana Tja Tjinotjiua and Gregory Auchumeb were also dropped, but will remain with the team until Saturday after a friendly match between the Brave Warriors and Rwanda.
After that, the team will continue to prepare for the tournament in Tunis and will leave for their base in Morocco in Marrakesh on 11 January.
According to the media statement, Mannetti went for experience and versatility when he chose the 23 from the 27 players currently in camp in Tunisia.
He is quoted as saying the spirit remains high and the players are looking forward to performing well during the tournament.
We looked at experience over the games played last year and also considering versatility in terms of tactics and options going into the CHAN tournament. All players remain positive including Tjinotjiua and Auchumeb. The goal remains common and we are unified in that so far, Mannetti explained.
Meanwhile, Tigers left winger Benyamin Nenkavu overcame his knee injury, fighting his way into the Brave Warriors team for their maiden CHAN appearance, while Black Africas Emilio Martin, who can play at the back and in the midfield also made the cut.
Life Fighters youngster Kleophas Useb and the Young African pair of Vitapi Ngaruka and Himee Hengombe and late replacement Itamunua Keimuine and Tura Magic club mate Junias Theophilus all made the CHAN squad.
The Brave Warriors will face Ivory Coast on 14 January, Uganda on 18 January in Marrakech and finally play Zambia in Casablanca in the final group game on 22 January with the top two teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
