WINDHOEK, 19 DEC (NAMPA) President Hage Geingob, on behalf of the Swapo Party, has congratulated Cyril Ramaphosa for being elected president of the African National Congress (ANC).
Ramaphosa was elected president of the ANC during the partys 54th National Conference in Johannesburg on Monday, narrowly defeating Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
Geingob said the ANC remains a frontline revolutionary movement with an illustrious history of fighting to free African people from the grasp of colonial oppression.
The party also remains at the forefront of the fight for the economic emancipation of those who have been left on the borders of the economy in modern times, Geingob, who is also president of the Swapo Party, said in a statement issued Monday.
Geingob also paid tribute to former party president Jacob Zuma.
He has displayed courage, loyalty, patience and a mature temperament throughout his tenure, laying a platform for the continued growth and popularity of the ANC.
The president emphasised the historic links shared by Namibia and South Africa, saying the two countries were moulded by destiny, tested by history and solidified by a long and bitter struggle against apartheid.
Nowhere else are these links exemplified than at the political level, where the ANC and Swapo have shared trenches, have shared prisons and now, share the daunting responsibility of leading their people towards a future of shared economic prosperity, he said.
Geingob said he is available to Ramaphosa, who is also South Africas deputy president, should he feel the need to liaise with him on political matters and matters of mutual concern.
It is now time to unite all cadres behind one unified voice; the voice of peace, the voice of progress and the voice of prosperity for all South Africans, he said.
