ONGWEDIVA, 19 DEC (NAMPA) – Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) coordinator for Ohangwena, Hidipo Hamata has urged the Government to make fertilisers more affordable.
This would help people to improve their mahangu harvests and ultimately help reduce dependence on drought relief food handouts, he said in a statement issued recently.
Hamata also said this would help people produce a surplus which they can then sell to generate an income and improve their quality of life, amongst others through improved nutrition.
He also called on inhabitants of the Ohangwena Region to work hard in their mahangu fields, saying food security is important in the war on poverty, hunger and indignity.
“Along with high morals and discipline, we can produce more for our families and neighbours,” he said in the statement.
Hamata added that poverty and hunger will remain a problem if inhabitants choose alcohol over positive things such as cultivating their fields to produce mahangu.
“It is therefore our call that our people must invest their time in cultivating mahangu rather than sitting at cuca-shops or shebeens,” he said.
Ohangwena is one of the regions where mahangu is a staple food for inhabitants.
