WINDHOEK, 15 DEC (NAMPA) – Current Mayor of Outjo, Marius Sheya is now the Governor of the Kunene Region.
Sheya was appointed by President Hage Geingob on Friday.
The appointment was necessitated after the passing on of Angelika Muharukua in October this year.
The appointment is effective 01 January 2018, for a period of two years, until 20 March 2020, during which the new governor will serve subject to Article 110 B (2) of the Namibian Constitution.
In a statement issued on Friday, Minister of Presidential Affairs, Frans Kapofi outlined that in terms of the powers vested in [Geingob] and after consultation with key stakeholders, the President appointed Sheya as the Governor of the Kunene Region.
“President Geingob expressed his confidence and trust in the ability, commitment and fairness with which the governor will be expected to discharge his duties and responsibilities,” said Kapofi.
Regional governors are the link between the central government and regional council, local authorities and traditional leaders of that region, where they serve at the pleasure of the President as the appointing authority.
