WINDHOEK, 08 DEC (NAMPA) African Stars reclaimed top spot on the Namibia Premier League (NPL) after defeating Tura Magic by one goal to nil at Sam Nujoma Stadium on Thursday evening.
Godwin Jena scored the all-important goal four minutes from full time when he tapped in a cross from Aubrey Amseb in a rain drenched match.
Both teams failed to play their slick passing game as conditions prevented them from doing so with Stars enjoying more possession throughout the game.
Magic relied on counter attacks which proved ineffectual as the slippery conditions and a resolute defence prevented them from being successful.
Both teams tried to use the conditions to their advantage, especially with set pieces, but both goalkeepers were up to the task.
With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Stars upped the tempo and bombarded the Magic goal in search of a winner.
In one of those attacks, they managed to get the ball out wide to Amseb, who dribbled past a visibly limping Kondjeni Kambungu before squaring the ball to Jena, who knocked the ball past a diving Mervin Kasetura.
Tura Magic coach, James Britz, was gracious in defeat, saying that his side had been unlucky to play against the wind for the whole 90 minutes.
We lost to a better team today whose experience pushed them over the line. We tried to play on the counter, but conditions made it difficult. I am happy with the way the team played, he said.
Bobby Samaria on the opposite end paid tribute to Magic, saying they had played well, despite the loss.
It was a tough match. They made it difficult for us, but I am happy with the three points. I am disappointed on how we played though. I cannot blame the boys that much as the conditions made it difficult to play, he added.
With the win, Stars are now two points ahead of Magic with three rounds remaining of the first half of the 2017/2018 NPL season.
