OTJIWARONGO, 26 NOV (NAMPA) - Over 500 police and community members in the Otjozondjupa Region on Sunday gathered at the Mokati Sports Stadium to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol).
NamPol at Otjiwarongo started the activities with a street procession from the Orwetoveni residential area to the stadium.
Two police sniffers dogs - seven-year-old Commissioner Chico and 13-month-old Cadet Delta - formed part of the march.
Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council, Julius Neumbo said the day is aimed at acknowledging police officers for rendering protection and safeguarding human life and property.
“We also want to thank you for serving this nation with dedication, integrity and putting your lives at risk while executing your duties,” he said.
Neumbo, however, expressed concern with the increasing cases of baby dumping in the region, killing of women by their so-called lovers, possession of illegal firearms and excessive use of drugs and alcohol.
He urged community members to do their part and report all types of crimes committed in their communities to the police.
“Together we must build a society that respects the rule of law and guarantee safety of our police officers who are entrusted to protect us,” he said.
Representing the Otjiwarongo Local Authority, Gottfried Ubu-Gaeb called on the police to strictly maintain law and order in Otjiwarongo, investigate offences with intelligence and also to preserve security of the residents.
Ubu-Gaeb then called for a moment of silence in remembering those police officers who have died while performing national policing duties.
Otjozondjupa Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Heinrich Tjiveze, on his part, conferred 15 medals for bravery, outstanding performances and 10 and 20 years of service in the police force to some members.
Tjiveze then promised to the public hard work, dedication and uprooting of drug lords, armed robbers, stock theft rustlers and arresting reckless and negligent drivers on public roads in the region.
Similar celebrations were held countrywide.
