Otjiwarongo commemorates WAD 2017

OTJIWARONGO, 25 NOV (NAMPA) – Residents of the Otjiwarongo Constituency on Saturday gathered at the DRC soccer field for an early commemoration of World AIDS Day.
Commemorations for this annual day normally happens on 01 December and the 2017 national event is expected to take place in the Zambezi Region in Katima Mulilo.
Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor, Julius Neumbo at the event urged Namibians to accept the pandemic as a disease which can be controlled with antiretroviral drugs offered by the State and private medical institutions.
He called on those on treatment to capitalise on the opportunity and carefully take their drugs as prescribed in order to prolong healthy positive living.
Neumbo urged private organisations and businesspeople to also support the activities aimed at fighting HIV and AIDS.
“World AIDS Day is being held on 01 December each year for you and me to have an opportunity to unite in the fight against the pandemic,” he said.
The councillor added that the commemorations of the day should be seen as a platform which strengthens support for those people living with the virus.
Otjozondjupa Regional AIDS Coordinating Committee Liaison Officer, Esther Fillemon told Nampa shortly after the event that each of the seven constituencies in the region is expected to hold its own event before or after 01 December.
She said her office set aside some money that will assist with the arrangements of the constituency events in Okahandja, Okakarara, Omatako, Otjiwarongo, Otavi, Grootfontein and Tsumkwe.
On her part, Chairperson of the Otjiwarongo Constituency AIDS Coordinating Committee, Wilhelmina Kazondana-Goagoses said the event here was held early in order to have enough time to attend to the main event in Katima.
The Otjiwarongo Constituency commemoration kicked off with a street march accompanied by voluntary counselling and testing for HIV, dramas, speeches and cultural performances.
Food parcels were also distributed to 20 members of Otjiwarongo’s HIV and AIDS support group.
