WONDHOEK, 23 NOV (NAMPA) – The Oshana Queens Football Club is coming to Windhoek to win the NFA Women’s Super Cup scheduled to start this weekend, the club’s coach has said.
Michael Shadjuuka said they selected a strong team of players from different clubs in the Oshana Region.
“We are going to show these Windhoek teams what we are made off because we not coming to participate but compete. Our goal at this competition is to win it,” Shadjuuka told Nampa on enquiry Thursday.
He said competitions of this magnitude are welcomed by players, as it exposes them to new challenges.
“Competing in this competition will expose our girls to national selectors and I am confident that we will go far in the tournament, because we want our girls to be seen by the national team selectors,” he stated.
The Namibia Football Association (NFA) Women’s Desk launched the 2017 NFA Women’s Super Cup on Tuesday.
The games will take place at the NFA Technical Centre in Katutura and will see eight teams facing off on 25 and 26 November, with the semi-finals scheduled to take place on 01 December in Windhoek, while the final will serve as the curtain-raiser for the Debmarine Cup, which will be played on 02 December between Mighty Gunners and Young African at the Legare stadium in Gobabis.
Jackie Shipanga, the general manager of the Women’s Desk at NFA and the brainchild behind the competition, told this agency Thursday that Tura Magic Ladies, Khomas NamPol, and Girls and Goals are currently favourites to win the competition, but tough competition should be expected from the visiting teams.
“We are currently happy with the work that has been put in place and we are expecting competitive football from the teams that will come from Erongo and Oshana regions, who combined players from different teams,” said Shipanga.
She added that Khomas NamPol, who added NUST and UNAM football team players to their squad, will be a team to watch during the competition.
Teams are divided into two groups, with Tura Magic Ladies and Khomas NamPol seeded in groups A and B, respectively.
V-Power Angels, Mighty Erongo and Oshana Queens make up the remaining teams in group A, while Group B also consists of Gal & Goals, Right Way and Western Angels.
The winner of the tournament will walk away with N.dollars 10 000, runners-up N.dollars 5 000, third place N.dollars 3 000, and fourth place N.dollars 2 000.
Clubs that do not progress past the group stages will receive equipment from the NFA and sponsors.
